Shazam! is a 2019 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Directed by David F. Sandberg from a screenplay by Henry Gayden, and a story by Gayden and Darren Lemke. It is the first live-action film version of the character since the 1941 serial Adventures of Captain Marvel (the character's original name) and the seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU)

Synopsis

One year after Steppenwolf 's invasion, troubled 14-year-old orphan Billy Batson is set to move in with the Vazquez family and their other five foster kids. One day, Billy gets on a subway car and finds himself transported to a different realm where an ancient wizard gives him the power to transform into a godlike adult superhero by uttering the word "Shazam!" Billy and his new foster brother Freddy Freeman must discover Billy's new powers and how to use them to prevent the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, who has powers of his own, from committing nefarious acts.

  • Asher Angel as William "Billy" Batson: A troubled orphan boy who is chosen as the "Champion of Eternity" and given powers by an ancient wizard, and transforms into an adult with superpowers when he speaks the sorcerer's name. Batson is chosen as the new Champion, eons after the Council of Eternity selected another hero, who eventually killed all of the Council except for Shazam. The powers given from the ancient wizard to Batson include gifts bestowed upon the sorcerer from various others. These powers include: the wisdom of Solomon, granting increased intellect; the superhuman strength of Hercules, the superhuman stamina of Atlas; powers from Zeus, including the ability to summon lightning; the increased courage of Achilles, as well as being nearly indestructible; and the superhuman speed of Mercury, which provides him with the means of flight.

Sivana had himself been summoned by the Wizard Shazam as a child, but was not chosen as his champion, leading Sivana to spend his life trying to unlock the secret to return to the Rock of Eternity.
  • Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Frederick "Freddy" Freeman: Billy's foster brother and best friend, a disabled, nerdy superhero enthusiast who is the only person that knows that he is Shazam.
  • Djimon Hounsou as Shazam: An ancient wizard seeking a successor, who bestows his powers on Billy Batson so that he can magically transform into an adult superhero. Hounsou previously portrayed Ricou, the King of the Fishermen, in Aquaman.
  • Grace Fulton and Michelle Borth as Mary Bromfield: Billy's foster sister at his new home, the "den mother" who helps take care of the other kids and is debating attending college in California.
  • Ian Chen and Ross Butler as Eugene Choi: Billy's foster brother at his new home, a obsessive gaming enthusiast and budding techie.
  • Jovan Armand and D.J. Cotrona as Pedro Peña: Billy's foster brother at his new home, a shy, sensitive kid who has trouble opening up.
  • Faithe Herman and Meagan Good as Darla Dudley: Billy's youngest foster sibling at his new home, an energetic and effusive little girl.
  • Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez: The foster father of the group home where Billy and his friends live.
  • Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez: The foster mother of the group home where Billy and his friends live.

Benjamin Wallfisch was announced as the composer for Shazam! On July 21, 2018, marking the third collaboration with director David F. Sandberg.

Release

Shazam! premiered in Toronto on March 15, 2019, and was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures in RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema and IMAX 3D on April 5, 2019.

On March 13, 2019, the Chinese release date of the film was announced as April 5, 2019, same date with the US release.

Box office

As of April 11, 2019, Shazam! has grossed $64.8 million in the United States and Canada, and $102.3 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $167.1 million, against a production budget of between $80-$100 million.

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 91% based on 309 critics.

On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 71 out of 100, based on 52 critics.

On IMDB it has 7.7 out of 100 based on 47,312 critics.
