Destiny isn't a path that any cat follows blindly. It is always a matter of choice, and sometimes the heart speaks loudest.

Dove paw made a mess of the hunting, true. But she ran to help a Clan mate in trouble when she had no idea what danger she would have to face on the other side of that bramble thicket. And when we couldn't get Ice cloud out of the hole, she was quick to volunteer to be lowered down to help her, even though no cat really knew what might have been down there.

Every sacrifice I make is for the good of my Clan—and for the other Clans around the lake. Even if that means sacrificing myself.

Fire heart dashed to the warrior's side. Cloud tail was standing stiff-legged, every hair in his pelt on end as if he were facing an enemy. His eyes were fixed on the limp heap of tabby fur huddled at his paws." Why, Fire heart?" Cloud tail wailed. "Why her?" Fireheart knew, but rage and grief made it hard to speak. "Because Tiger star wants the pack to get a taste of cat blood," he rasped. The dead cat lying in front of them was Brindle face.

[Fire heart]mewed,"It's not my place to judge you." Grey stripe looked up as Fire heart went on." Grey stripe, whatever you decide to do, I will always be your friend.

Fire heart tensed, waiting for whatever had hunted down these apprentices to emerge from the trees and attack, but nothing stirred. Feeling as if his legs hardly belonged to him, he sprang down and stumbled across to Swift paw. The apprentice lay on his side, his legs splayed out. His black-and-white fur was torn, and his body was covered with dreadful wounds, ripped by teeth far bigger than any cat's. His jaws still snarled and his eyes glared. He was dead, and Fire heart could see that he had died fighting.

[Fire heart] was interrupted by a screech from Cloud tail. "Fire heart! Fire heart, Bright paw isn't dead!" Fireheart spun around and raced across the clearing to crouch beside Bright paw. Her white-and-ginger fur, which, she had always kept so neatly groomed, was spiky with drying blood. On one side of her face the fur was torn away, and there was blood where her eye should have been. One ear had been shredded, and there were huge claw marks scored across her muzzle.

Fire will save the Clan

Fire will save the Clan," she murmured, and Fire heart remembered the mysterious prophecy that he had heard from his earliest days in Thunderclap. "You never understood, did you?" Blue star went on. "Not even when I gave you your apprentice name, Fire paw. And I doubted it myself, when fire raged through our camp. Yet I see the truth now. Fire heart, you are the fire who will save Thunderclap.
